Christmas Parade

For Blythewood's Christmas parade, the streets are closed, politicians show up, hundreds of people participate, young-uns grin, and grown-ups applaud...and a small town has a large time.--GBCC member Harold Branham. (The Blythewood Leader, 12/6/07)

Parade Sponsorship: Individuals and organizations are welcome to contribute any amount to the Chamber's parade fund. As a special thank-you, the first 40 parade sponsors contributing $250 or more receive a numbered, autographed print by local artist Harold Branham. Each year's print is different with Branham incorporating a Blythewood landmark or historical feature into his artwork.

The History: Blythewood's first Christmas parade in 1995 featured 15 people and lasted all of 10 minutes. According to GBCC member and Blythewood area artist Harold Branham, the parade started at the fire station on Main Street and ended at the post office, where Santa handed out hugs and candy canes to the kids. Today, the parade features over 100 participants--including bands, floats and all types of organizations--and lasts over an hour. The parade lines up along Oakhurst Road near the fire station, winds through the business district (Main Street to Blythewood Road to Boney Road) and ends at Bethel- Hanberry Elementary School. And it's not unusual for kids to receive hugs and candy all along the parade route.

The Significance: Local residents Billy & Carolyn Raines organized the parade in 1995 as a way of thanking the Blythewood community for the tremendous support Carolyn received after being diagnosed with lupus. Carolyn passed away in February 2007, but her memory lives on as her family and the community continue this Christmas tradition. Today, the parade is made possible through the generous financial support of numerous sponsors including the Greater Blythewood Chamber of Commerce and its members. After parade expenses are covered, remaining contributions are designated to the Chamber's scholarship fund.

The Greater Blythewood Chamber of Commerce proudly sponsors and organizes the annual Blythewood Christmas Parade. Traditionally held the second Sunday in December, the parade is the highlight of the town's holiday season. In fact, Santa Claus makes an official appearance each year at the end of the parade--riding atop a mule!
